Diving

Bonaire offers scuba diving 24/7, 365 days a year and in a pristine underwater environment with access to many locations for shore and boat diving, it is an award winning diving destination that accommodates every skill level, from beginner to advanced diver. There are 63 official dive sites on Bonaire, of which 54 are shore dive sites and 26 more boat dives on Klein Bonaire. Bonaire is an underwater paradise that awaits you, with more than 350 fish species and 57 species of soft and stony coral. Bonaire's pristine reefs and marine life are unique to the Caribbean because the waters around Bonaire have been protected by a Marine Park for over 25 years. Bonaire ranks among the top diving destinations in the world. The island's location in the South Caribbean gives it an arid climate with little rainfall; consequently, the waters are exceptionally clear of silt, calm & dive-able year round. Water temperatures average a warm 78-84 F, with visibility averaging over 100ft.

 Bonaire

Some fish found throughout Bonaire’s waters include colorful Parrot Fish of all varieties, Blue and Rainbow included.  Friendly Angel Fish, feisty Sergeant Majors, and beautiful Butterfly Fish dot the reef.  Scrawled File Fish swim by sporting electric blue stripes.  Grunts, Gobies and Groupers. Delight in schools of Blue Tangs and Jacks.  Camouflaging Frog Fish blend in so well, but are certainly present. In addition, keep an eye out for Sea Turtles, Eagle Rays and Sea Cucumbers.  Get lucky and see a Whale Shark, Dolphin Pod or Manta Ray.  There is an abundance of life in the Caribbean Sea.  Bonaire’s waters have so much to explore!

Generally, the reefs in Bonaire along the leeward side follow a zonal pattern (exceptions exist).  The shallows from shore to drop-off contain Elkhorn, Staghorn, Boulder Star and dominant stony coral as well as a variety of Gorgonia. Salt Pier

From the drop-off, the dominant coral species is usually Boulder Star coral, locally also Lettuce coral.  At greater depths, the dominant species are the plate-forming corals like Great Star and Blushing Star coral.

About 55 other species of coral, varying by habitat, can be found in Bonaire. Various densities of Gorgonians, black corals and sponges appear and differ between areas.

Buddy Dive Resort Bonaire is geared up for you to make the most out of your dive vacation. With a fleet of custom dive boats and a well stocked ‘Drive Thru’ offering air and nitrox tanks, every divers needs can be satisfied.

Bonaire Highlights

Bonaire has three distinctive land types. The central region is semi-arid, while the southern region is flat and wide open with a unique mangrove system and salt pans. The northern part is more green and hilly. With a height of 714 feet, Brandaris is Bonaire’s highest point. An average annual rainfall of 22 inches, an almost constant water temperature of 80 degrees F, and a slightly higher air temperature of 82 degrees F, makes Bonaire a pleasant environment in which to vacation. In the South you will find the salt pans and mangrove forests - this area is wide, flat, and open. Besides the impressive and important mangrove trees, vegetation is limited here because of the influence of salt and wind.

While Dutch and Papiamentu are the official languages, English is widely spoken by most people on the island. On Bonaire’s main street, Kaya Grandi, you won’t find busy and overcrowded shops retailing the traditional gadgets and souvenirs you
encounter when visiting other main Caribbean tourist destinations. The selection of goods offered are like Bonaire itself: diverse and surprising. They have some shops that offer high quality jewelry while others carry arts and crafts from their local artisans.

Kralendijk Driving all the way along the west coast, you will see this small, but lively town that nowadays is the commercial center of the island. Stroll over to Kaya Grandi and visit the various souvenir shops, taste a chilled beer on a terrace, and finish the day with a delicious meal in one of Bonaire’s superb restaurants.

Salt Pan Mountains Various salt pans shape the landscaping in the wide, flat, open southern region. From a distance they look like snowy mountains, a truly amazing and surprising scenery in the tropics.

Cave Exploration Bonaire has many cave systems, some are dry and others have lakes and tunnels. Here at Buddy Dive they offer you a unique opportunity to explore these ancient wonders with their majestic stalactites and stalagmites. They even offer you the chance to snorkel underground in the crystal clear water housed within.

 Caves

Bonaire may be best known as a top dive destination, but that just skims the surface of the water sports that are gaining more and more attention on this peaceful and relaxing Dutch Caribbean island. Bonaire’s best-kept secret? Lac Bay. It’s over 3 square miles of tropical blue water providing near-perfect windsurfing conditions, ideal for beginners and advanced windsurfers alike.

Lac Bay

While Bonaire is well known for its diving, there are many other activities available ranging from active programs to more leisurely pursuits. You can enjoy Kite surfing, Windsurfing, Mountain Biking, Kayaking, or a Sunset Cruise. At the Dive and Activity Center they have the information you’ll need to discover the Bonaire activity that is right for you! A member of the Bonaire activity staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have, as well as to assist you with recommendations on where to go and what to do.
